Gallery Director, Burt Finger, was invited to be one of a handful of American reviewers to take part in Russia's first International Photography Portfolio Review in Moscow. This event was organized by the Houston FotoFest Biennial staff and a team of independent Russian curators. The event was sponsored by Roman Abramovich and the Iris Foundation, which is run by Daria Zhukova. The reviews took place in the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture. About 40 curators, gallerists, book publishers and photo editors from many countries took part in this important initiative.
After reviewing about 75 portfolios by artists from Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus, Burt Finger selected 7 to feature in this important group exhibition in May. Several of the photographers have never been exhibited in the United States.
Works featured will be diverse. Some will have political undertone (Gregori Maiofis, Eugene Zaluzhny and Ivan Mihailov), some carry pure design aspects (Valery Samarin), and some lie in-between like Mikhail Dashevsky’s street photography of Moscow during the 1990’s. Architecture figures in the work of Vitaly Smirnov. Dmitri Beliakov's document of the war in Chechnya offers a personal account of living in an upside-down environment ravaged by war.
